As the Milwaukee Health Department begins reviewing school reopening plans, a growing number of the city’s charter and private voucher schools have announced they will begin the school year online rather than risk exposing students and staff to the deadly coronavirus.
Milwaukee Excellence Charter School, Carmen Schools of Science and Technology, Messmer Catholic Schools, St. Marcus Lutheran School and others have joined Milwaukee Public Schools in announcing a virtual-only start of the school year — some beginning this week.

School leaders cite a number of reasons, including parental preference and the delay by the Milwaukee Health Department in setting criteria for schools to reopen. But an overarching concern, they say, is the high rates of COVID-19 infections and deaths in the Black and Latino neighborhoods where many of their students and workers live.
