Carmen Northwest Joins Historic Harambee Neighborhood

Starting in 2026–2027, Carmen Northwest will relocate to the Harambee neighborhood, uniting our school’s legacy with a community rich in history, culture, and opportunity. This move to the former HOPE High School building at 3215 N. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive ensures continuity for families while creating exciting new pathways for learning, partnership, and growth.

This transition ensures stability for our students and families while expanding opportunities for partnerships, enrichment, and real-world learning rooted in community. We’re excited to deepen our connection to this historic neighborhood and to continue preparing students for success in college, careers, and beyond.

The impact of this ambitious project will be felt throughout our entire Milwaukee community as we prepare the next generation of students for a life of choice and opportunity

As someone who grew up on the south side of Milwaukee and now works at Carmen, it’s incredibly exciting to see a new high school rising right in my own community. This is more than just a new building, it’s a bold step forward, built on the strong foundation of the Carmen legacy of academic excellence, equity, and community. I’m proud to witness and be part of this expansion that will impact generations of students right here at home. Together, we’re creating a future where every student can thrive.

I’ve been nothing but grateful to work for Carmen during this time. The choices we have made at Carmen are informed by parents, students and teachers, and I felt heard in the process.

Carmen prepared me for a future that I didn’t see for myself and I hope to make that possibility visible for my students. I am lucky to witness remarkable potential from my students each and every day, and it is because of them that I continue my path as an educator at Carmen.

— Elli Gil, Assistant Principal, Carmen Middle School South

Carmen Middle School South students

Carmen Schools is an awesome family-oriented school community.  It’s a place where you feel safe dropping your kids off.  I love the teachers at Stellar and Carmen Middle South.  It just feels like family here.

My advice for younger Carmen students is, never give up, ask for guidance, and step out of your comfort zone. Remember to ask for help, it really will pay off in the end. The rules and expectations at Carmen will prepare you for the future and adulthood.

The College Transition Office at Carmen assisted my family with the application, financial aid, and scholarship process. All of their support has allowed me to get accepted into colleges that I didn't think would be possible.

Thanks to Carmen and the support from my teachers and staff members, I was able to succeed academically. I had many opportunities, such as joining the All-In Milwaukee scholarship program and going to college debt-free.
