Building on Our Legacy: New Southside High School

Carmen Schools of Science & Technology is building a new permanent high school that will unite our South and Southeast campuses into one new vibrant learning community. In December 2024, we broke ground at 2005 West Oklahoma Avenue, marking an exciting milestone for our students, families, and community.

Opening in the fall of 2026, this thoughtfully designed facility will feature innovative learning environments, labs, arts and athletic areas, and welcoming spaces for the broader community. Guided by input from students, families, and educators, the new campus will strengthen our mission to develop students who are prepared for college, career, community-involvement, and family life.

This plan reflects our commitment to invest in our students and our community.

A Unified Learning Community

By combining two campuses, we can offer a wider pool of electives and course options that celebrate inclusivity and diversity, ensuring every student can find their passion and potential.

Expanded Sports and Extracurricular Programs

We know we are stronger together!  We’ve listened to students and families who asked for expanded opportunities.  Combined teams and activities will allow students to enjoy a richer, more varied experiences, fostering teamwork, collaboration, and school spirit!

State-of-the-Art Facilities

Our new campus will provide an inspiring environment that supports the high-quality education we have always strived to provide to our students.  At Carmen Schools, we believe that every child should have access to the resources they need to thrive-regardless of race or background.

Where Long Term Vision Takes Shape

For nearly a decade, Carmen has been laying the groundwork for this moment—strengthening its financial foundation, refining its long-term vision, and searching for the ideal location. That vision is now becoming a reality.

In 2024, Carmen secured a six-acre site at S. 20th Street and W. Oklahoma Avenue—strategically located near all three existing southside campuses. Looking ahead, Carmen plans to build a new, three-story, 120,000-square-foot campus designed to serve up to 1,100 student in grades 9-12s and support continued excellence in education.

The new facility will feature:

  • College and Career Center
  • Soccer field, large gym, and other athletic facilities
  • New Steam Lab
  • Infinite possibilities for our students, families, and staff

As someone who grew up on the south side of Milwaukee and now works at Carmen, it’s incredibly exciting to see a new high school rising right in my own community. This is more than just a new building, it’s a bold step forward, built on the strong foundation of the Carmen legacy of academic excellence, equity, and community. I’m proud to witness and be part of this expansion that will impact generations of students right here at home. Together, we’re creating a future where every student can thrive.

I’ve been nothing but grateful to work for Carmen during this time. The choices we have made at Carmen are informed by parents, students and teachers, and I felt heard in the process.

Carmen prepared me for a future that I didn’t see for myself and I hope to make that possibility visible for my students. I am lucky to witness remarkable potential from my students each and every day and it is because of them that I continue my path as an educator at Carmen.
